Our lives are a culmination of experiences, and each of us carries lived moments that shape how we think, feel, and move through the world. Trauma lives within all of us, whether we consciously recognize it or not, and it is passed on through generations, the collective, even civilizations. We are living in a time of deep imbalance, reflected both within the individual and across the collective, yet also a time of opportunity for growth and transformation. But before we can truly heal life on this planet, we must first do the work to heal from within.
Everyone’s path is different, and each person needs their own practices, therapies, and tools for healing. Today, I offer an exploration into Samyama—a journey that invites deep awareness, presence, and inner stillness, allowing healing to begin from within and ripple outward. By recognizing the Divine within us, we see that we are all One.
A Path to Self-Understanding
Samyama represents three essential practices that can lead to emotional healing through self-realization. Together, these components offer a path towards complete union—a state of being attainable by fostering simple practices on a daily basis. These simple ingredients combined hold immense transformative power. We deepen our self-understanding and find a pathway to liberation from the chaos that traps us in past experiences and future anxieties.
The Essence of Samyama
This non-dualistic state brings deep tranquility, bliss, and a direct knowing of reality. It is in this state that true healing can occur. Samyama is made up of three interwoven practices: Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi. Together, they guide the practitioner toward the subtlest experience of awareness. As these practices deepen, a natural sense of ease and grace arises, and mastery of the self leads not to control, but to freedom and inner liberation.
Dharana: Focused Awareness
The journey begins with Dharana, the practice of centered awareness. It involves bringing attention and concentration to one object, which can be the breath, a sensation, a sound, or an internal point of awareness. Peaceful sounds of nature can also help cultivate this quality.
Through this practice, thought patterns, emotions, and Samskaras—life’s imprints that manifest as triggers—can be observed without attachment or judgment. This allows liberation from past experiences and the habitual reactions of the ego. As practice deepens, it cultivates wisdom and discernment, helping us perceive our life experience as it truly is, rather than through triggers and conditioned reactions.
With regular practice, the mind strengthens its ability to remain balanced, even though different qualities may arise. Focused awareness forms the foundation for Dhyana, or meditation, where thoughts begin to settle and a sense of inner stillness emerges—and we begin to find a gap between thoughts.
Dhyana: Meditation
As focused awareness deepens, it naturally flows into Dhyana, the practice of meditation. In this state, awareness is steady and uninterrupted, without effortfully holding focus. The mind begins to settle, and we start to notice the flow of thoughts rather than being caught up in them. And, it's not always an easy journey. It can take years before we begin to truly be able to be in the present moment.
Meditation is the simple practice of observing your thought patterns and discovering the gap between thoughts. With regular practice, this gap gradually increases in length, creating space where we can connect fully with the present moment. It is not about forcing thoughts to disappear, but about resting in the awareness that exists between them.
With consistent practice, the separation between observer and experience begins to dissolve. We become less identified with our thoughts, emotions, and habitual reactions, and more able to witness them without judgment. This continuous practice fosters inner stillness, clarity, and a sense of harmony, allowing us to experience a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us. Over time, this space of awareness expands, guiding us toward integration and laying the groundwork for Samadhi, the state of complete integration with our true nature.
Samadhi: Integration
Samadhi is the culmination of the practice, arising when we naturally merge into a state of complete awareness. In this state, the sense of “I” dissolves, allowing awareness to rest in its essential nature and leading to a deeper understanding of our true nature beyond identity.
Samadhi is not something to try to make happen; it unfolds naturally as effort drops away. Even partial experiences of Samadhi offer profound clarity, insight, and a sense of inner freedom.

The Journey of Breath and Awareness
It all starts with the breath, leading us to detach from our emotions and thought patterns. As we deepen this practice, we transform into the observer, the witness, instead of being the participants of our thought patterns. Focused awareness is nurtured, which over time seamlessly leads into meditation, and from there evolves to integration—resting in one's essential Self, beyond identity, thought, or form, and experiencing Oneness with everything.
To many, it feels abstract—can it really be achieved by the everyday practitioner? Samyama offers a pathway to heightened awareness and presence. It is not intellectual understanding but an experiential happening. It arises when focused awareness, meditation, and integration merge into a unified state of being.
Therapeutic Yoga and the Art of Creating Space
Therapeutic yoga emphasizes the healing aspects of the practice to promote physical and emotional well-being. By utilizing techniques that enhance self-awareness, we embark on a journey toward deeper healing and acceptance. Surrendering to the present moment and releasing attachments can be challenging, especially when facing resistant trauma. The practice of Samyama provides tools for navigating this resistance with compassion, helping us gradually work through emotional blockages.
In therapeutic settings, we guide focus inward during Dharana, rooting awareness in the breath or sensations and sounds of nature. A key ingredient, however, on the journey toward Samyama is the practice of Pratyahara—an invitation to detach from our emotions. Not by suppressing them, but by turning inward and simply being present with what arises. Observing and simply being with sensations and feelings and accepting them as they are, we soften intensity and shift from reactivity to witnessing, allowing awareness to emerge. As we cultivate awareness, we discover that we can release emotional pain by fully seeing it rather than resisting. We can then work towards softening from anxiety by recognizing feelings without judgment.
Acceptance as a Core Component
Acceptance is vital in the practice of Samyama, inviting us to embrace our current reality and replace judgment with contentment—Santosha. Acceptance paves the way for release, creating space for inner peace and growth.
When we learn to accept the ups and downs of thoughts and feelings, we begin to see that these fluctuations are temporary, fostering greater understanding of ourselves. By allowing ourselves to be fully present with our experiences, embracing both light and shadow, we cultivate self-love and forgiveness. This openness helps us navigate challenges with compassion and strengthens our capacity for healing.

Bringing It All Together: The Journey Towards Wholeness
The journey through Samyama is progressive, requiring dedication and patience. It can unveil emotional layers, inviting us to confront traumas and unmet needs. Within this journey lies an incredible gift—the opportunity to discover one’s innate sense of wholeness.
As we integrate focused awareness, meditation, and integration, we learn to break free from self-imposed limitations. Each layer peeled away brings us closer to our true essence. Samyama illuminates a path toward inner peace that is deeply experiential, allowing practitioners to embrace both their light and shadow.
By practicing Samyama, we cultivate clarity, harmony, and a deeper connection with ourselves and the world. The process supports emotional healing, fosters self-understanding, and ultimately guides us toward living fully in the present moment.
Finding Peace and Unity
Embarking on the journey of Samyama offers profound opportunities for self-discovery and emotional healing. As we dive deep into the practice of focused awareness and meditation toward integration, we cultivate heightened awareness that encourages acceptance and letting go.
Through the transformative power of Samyama, we can navigate the complexities of past experiences, moving toward wholeness and unity from within. By embracing this practice, we awaken to the beauty of our true Selves, shedding layers of emotional baggage and stepping into a place where peace resides.
This journey is deeply personal, yet collectively, we seek the same state of being—one aligned with our true potential and liberated from the imprints of our past. Samyama leads not only to healing but also to fully embodying our existence in the present moment. This integration reveals our essence, guiding us on the path to becoming whole again.
